Here a breakthrough is planned in digital information storage media.Microsoft has unveiled the new Project Silica, a data recording system on glass.
The technology can record 4.8 TB onto a thin 2mm thick borosilicate glass slab, with a potential shelf life of up to 10,000 years. The data is burned by a special laser in the form of phase voxels - three-dimensional analogues of pixels. In tests, we were able to create 301 recording layers—the equivalent of millions of books or thousands of 4K movies.
The project has been developed for about eight years with the participation of engineers and scientists from various fields.Unlike magnetic tapes, glass media does not degrade and does not require maintenance after recording. The technology is designed for archives, museums and the media industry, where long-term storage is important. The main limitation so far is the low recording speed of lasers, and this will be addressed in the coming years.
