China's first fully AI-generated full-length movie was a flop at the box office, and it's especially funny to see this against the backdrop of a cartoon that viewers called "worse than neural networks".
Sansingduy: The Future and the Past was released on October 23 and received over 10,000 sessions.
The 24-25 October sessions were attended by an average of two spectators, and by 26 October the halls' occupancy had dropped to 0.1%.
And the film, which features AI characters, voices, and environments, has had nearly 100 people working on it for more than two years.
By comparison, the Chinese cartoon Niu Lai, ridiculed for making worse animations than AI, became a viral hit and grossed about $10 million.
The interesting thing is that it was created by the director and his mother, and the budget was only about $200.
