For the first time, Shuhei Yoshida, former president of PlayStation Studios, explained in detail why one of Sony's most creative studios, Japan Studio , was shut down.
According to him, the studio made excellent creative AA-level games that were perfect for PSP and PS Vita. But when PlayStation started moving to AAA on PS4 and PS5, Japan Studio was unable to scale.
The creator of Gravity Rush, Caitiro Toyama, offered many ideas, but none of them got the green light until the studio closed.
Yoshida admits that he was worried about Japanese developers, but he also sees the bright side: former employees have now become indie developers and release games on all platforms.
