You can just leave Vale Sangora through one of the unclosed exits. The game counts this as the end and gives an achievement. If you don't save Cohen's family in 30 days, the game isn't over. The family dies, and the hero decides to avenge Brensis after that, the passage continues without any time limit. Brensis can be technically defeated in the prologue.
