Media: Sony is preparing massive layoffs at Bungie
As reported by Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier, after the release of the latest update for Destiny 2, Bungie will undergo large-scale staff cuts. There will simply be no work for a significant part of the development team.
The main reason is that Destiny 3 never went into production, and new Destiny projects did not receive approval from Sony management. The exact scale of layoffs is still unknown.
Bungie's main bet now is Marathon. The action shooter was released on March 5, 2026, but did not live up to expectations.Analysts estimate that by the end of March, Bungie had sold about 1.2 million copies, generating approximately $55 million in revenue excluding microtransactions.
Against the backdrop of a budget of hundreds of millions of dollars, these figures are regarded as disappointing. However, Sony itself apparently continues to consider Marathon a more promising asset for development than Destiny.
Some Destiny 2 developers have already been transferred to Marathon support. The studio expects to grow its audience over time.
Sony bought Bungie in 2022 for $3.6 billion.Since then, the studio has lost hundreds of employees: about 100 people were laid off in October 2023, and another 220 in 2024 after the release of The Final Shape.
Several projects have been cancelled, including a Destiny spin-off codenamed Payback. At the end of the last fiscal year, Sony wrote off about $765 million related to the impairment of Bungie's assets and losses.
