Memory deficit could persist until the end of 2030 SK hynix head forecast

The memory deficit seen in the global market will continue until the end of 2030, according to SK hynix CEO Quak No Jeong, following the opening ceremony of the company's new plant in Indiana.

SK hynix had previously expected the shortage of conventional RAM to last until 2028. Now the manufacturer has extended this period by another two years, as it does not yet see signs of a noticeable decline in demand. According to Quak No Jung, the situation will improve gradually.

The main reason was the development of AI systems. The technology giants are increasingly buying in specialized memory, including HBMs, and often ordering it in configurations designed for specific equipment. Such contracts allow manufacturers to know in advance how much product customers will need and to plan production volumes more accurately. This reduces the risk of sudden excess memory on the market, which could lead to a rapid drop in prices for ordinary consumers.

The SK hynix facility in Indiana will not be producing memory chips on its own. They will continue to be manufactured in South Korea and then shipped to the U.S. for packaging and testing of the HBM4E. The first production sites are expected to launch in the second half of 2028, with mass production expected to begin in the third quarter of 2029.

It follows that memory costs will continue to affect the prices of computers, smartphones, video cards, game consoles, and other consumer electronics products.
