One of the last big secrets of PS2 iron was revealed 26 years after the console came out.

After four years of work, the DiscoStarslayer modder was able to hack and extract the contents of the MechaCon chip - an important part of the PS2 that controls the optical drive and participates in the piracy protection system.

To do this, the chip had to be physically unlocked, its contents visually counted, and a software solution developed to extract it.

MechaCon can now be fully stored and studied, potentially paving the way for new modifications to the PS2, improved emulation and homebrew, and the creation of a full-fledged optical drive emulator ODE. #game
