ORF: Sony redirects plant in Austria from disc production to microlens production
The Japanese company Sony is already beginning the process of eliminating the production of physical discs for console video games. This was reported by the Austrian broadcaster Österreichischer Rundfunk (ORF).
The company operates a disk production plant in Thalgau (federal state of Salzburg). However, this week it became known that from 2028 Sony will abandon the production of game discs.
As explained by the head of Sony Digital Audio Disc Corporation, Dietmar Tanzer, the decision will directly affect the plant in Austria. The fact is that 50% of orders are for discs for PlayStation consoles.Of these, 20% are new orders, but by 2028 the figure will drop to 10%.
The Thalgau plant currently employs 300 people. On July 1, they were notified that the restructuring had begun.
The company does not intend to reduce the plant's staff, but people will have to undergo retraining.Sony intends to repurpose the site for the production of optical microlenses; about 30 million euros have already been spent on modernization.
Mass production will begin in 2027; Sony considers the new direction more promising.
