The Persona series could end on Persona 2 in Atlus acknowledged that Persona 3 became critical to the future of the franchise.
Producer Kazuhisa Wada said that after Persona 2, there were no plans for a third part at all, and there was a real risk that the series would simply disappear.
Atlus also realized that their games were too focused on the core of fans, so they decided to make Persona 3 more accessible to a wider audience.
It was in Persona 3 that Social Links appeared, the structure of the RPG, the interface, the presentation and the overall visual style changed significantly.
According to Wada, the team literally "stands back against the wall": the success of Persona 3 depends on whether the series continues to exist.
