EA closes BioWare and cancels the new Mass Effect. One of the oldest RPG studios ceases to exist 31 years after its founding.
According to Bloomberg, Electronic Arts will fire about 400 employees (3% of the staff), including about 50 developers of BioWare.
The decision followed EA's $55 billion buy-out by a consortium led by a Saudi investment fund that left the company with about $18 billion in debt, and management had previously announced plans to cut costs by $700 million.
While EA will continue to invest in Battlefield, Apex Legends, sports simulators, the new Star Wars Jedi and the Iron Man game, Respawn and DICE will also be working on a joint project, presumably a new Battlefront.
In addition, The Sims has been canceled under the code name Project Lotus, and the skate team is expected to be shortened.
BioWare gave the Mass Effect and Dragon Age industries a gift, but after the failures of Anthem, Mass Effect: Andromeda and the disappointing sales of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, the studio was never able to recover.
