According to sources, after a deal with the Saudi investment fund, EA faced a $18 billion debt burden and decided to reconsider future projects.
Two expensive science fiction games were in development Mass Effect Universe and Star Wars Battlefront 3. The budgets of each were estimated at hundreds of millions of dollars.
EA management felt that Battlefront 3 had a better chance of commercial success, so they chose it by closing BioWare and cancelling the new Mass Effect.
It is assumed that DICE and Respawn are now working together on Battlefront 3.
