Epic Games has announced an AI game-game and is in for a scandal .
Epic Games has announced a game for independent developers using the Unreal Engine. The prize pool for the event is $65,000, with another $50,000 going to individual grants for the most promising projects.
Epic Games, which invited developers to take part in the competition, made a big bet on artificial intelligence. Participants were not only allowed to use a variety of AI tools, including the generation of visual assets and code-writing assistants, but were also actively recommended to use them.
The accompanying message suggested that we get up to 50,000, and the six-handed commercial jokingly contrasted the possibility of releasing a great game in just one week with the need to spend a whole month prototyping without using AI.
The response to the event was mixed, and in some places sharply negative. Epic Games received a wave of criticism on social media primarily because the entire contest was built around working with artificial intelligence.
The discussions turned out to be so violent that the company had to change the rules of the competition and soften some of the wording.
Specifically, the $2,500 prize was previously only available to participants who had prepared a presentation about AI tools used in the game's development.
In addition, the direct requirement to use AI has disappeared from the FAQ, and participants are now offered to work in any way they can, including without neural networks.
The event runs from November 12 to 15. Registration is open on itch.io.
