Has Sony finally lost interest in VR?

Sony has sold Meta* 43 patents related to virtual, augmented and mixed reality technologies. The rights transition was registered between June and September 2026.

It's part of a larger agreement that was signed in December 2025, and it covers a total of 419 patents: 180 in the U.S. and 239 in other countries and regions, including Japan, China, South Korea, and Europe.

Analysts see the deal as further evidence of Sony's declining interest in developing its own VR business.

Sony began working on virtual reality in the PlayStation 4 generation with the release of the PlayStation VR headset. It became relatively successful, after which the company approved the creation of the PlayStation VR2 for the PlayStation 5.

The new headset came out in 2023 and failed to become a hit, with high cost, lack of backwards compatibility with first-generation games and a shortage of major projects hindering the release of the helmet.

Sony itself was unable to provide proper support for the model. The company released only two original games for the PlayStation VR2 Horizon Call of the Mountain and Firewall Ultra.

Earlier, Sony Interactive Entertainment's marketing director, Eric Lempell, called VR an important but still early stage of the company's gaming business segment.

*Meta is a banned company in Russia, recognized as an extremist organization and added to the terrorist registry.
