Is the PlayStation 6 Portable getting an exclusive chip from AMD?

The PlayStation 6 Portable may be the only console in its class with a custom chip on the AMD RDNA 5 graphics architecture, according to Richard Lidbetter of Digital Foundry.

The industry is discussing whether Sony has some kind of exclusivity for RDNA 5 for a portable device, but that doesn't mean the company has signed an agreement with AMD that prohibits architecture from being used in competitors' products.

It's all about the order volume. Developing a custom processor for a particular console requires a significant investment, so AMD, according to unofficial reports, has become more selective about such projects. It seems that Sony is the only one that has been able to secure a large enough order to make the creation of a new specialized chip profitable for the American giant.

Kepler_L2's insider previously claimed that Microsoft would have to guarantee the purchase of at least 10 million chips to develop a custom processor for the portable Xbox, which the company was not prepared for.

If the insights are confirmed, Sony will be able to stand out at the launch of the PlayStation 6 Portable. The new architecture will provide its portable console with advantages in energy efficiency, lighting processing, and AI upscale work. Other manufacturers will have to choose affordable solutions for their new systems or wait for the next generation processors to become the mass standard.

The PlayStation 6 Portable hasn't been officially announced yet, but Sony has repeatedly hinted that it wants to return to the portable market with a full-fledged portable console.
