Midnight Club 5 was actually in development, but Rockstar canceled the project due to internal conflicts and priorities changes.
Former Rockstar senior designer Chris Roberts said the team had already started working on the game and had built prototypes of several cities.
According to him, there was a serious conflict between Rockstar's New York division and the Midnight Club team in San Diego, and one of the reasons was that Midnight Club: Los Angeles had been delayed, but there was also disagreement over creative control.
Despite competition from Need for Speed and Burnout, the series remained a success, with players spending more time on it than on some other racing projects.
After the cancellation of the fifth installment, the team was disbanded: some employees were transferred to the development of the RAGE and Red Dead Redemption engines, the rest were fired.
