“Minions & Monsters” had the worst start in the history of the “Despicable Me” franchise, grossing $64.5 million over the five-day weekend instead of the projected $80 million.

The weak domestic box office numbers are partly explained by the fact that US Independence Day fell on a Saturday, so many decided not to go to the movies.

Outside the US, the cartoon has grossed $98 million, and worldwide box office receipts have already reached $159.8 million.
