One of the major suppliers of memory chips for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 cartridges is leaving the business.

Macronix has announced that it will phase out the production of ROM chips, with no new products, and the third quarter of 2026 being the last to report on ROM sales separately.

Within a year, the ROM share of Macronix's revenue dropped from 26% to 5%, and the company is redirecting its power to NOR, eMMC, and NAND.

While Macronix is not Nintendo's only supplier, physical cartridges will not disappear. However, analyst David Gibson believes the situation could accelerate the transition to Game-Key Cards, which require online game downloads and digital sales.

For comparison, in April/June, Nintendo's digital games accounted for 61.5% of sales, compared with 59.3% a year earlier. #game
