Last Sentinel, an open-world science fiction game set in futuristic Tokyo, may actually be cancelled.
According to sources, the project was restarted after six years of problematic development:
Lightspeed LA has cut 80 employees; the studio has undergone a major restructuring; the game's budget is said to be in the hundreds of millions of dollars; Last Sentinel was originally conceived as an open world cyberpunk game inspired by Rockstar projects; a much smaller team is now working on it; development was accompanied by delays, high staff turnover, lack of clear creative vision and growth in expenses; internal testing at the beginning of the year received mostly negative reviews; Tencent management was dissatisfied with the game and required significant improvement; in July, the company decided not to continue its development as it is currently.
Officially, Last Sentinel is still in production, but sources claim that if the game is released, it will be very different from the original announcement.
Tencent wanted to challenge Grand Theft Auto. Six years later, hundreds of millions of dollars and many high-profile promises from Last Sentinel were re-launched and most likely canceled and 80 people fired, Bloomberg journalist Jason Shreyer reported.
It's worth noting that the director of set scenes and in-game media is Emmanuel Drakmann, the brother of Neil Drakmann from Naughty Dog.
