The head of Epic Games accused Valve of inciting hatred towards AI

Tim Sweeney, head of Epic Games, accused Valve of harassing developers using artificial intelligence, saying that Steam's policy is targeting buyers against such games and depriving their authors of income.

Valve requires developers to disclose the use of generative AI in games released via Steam. Buyers can read explanations about what the neural networks were used for.

The reason for Sweeney's comment was a notice on the Steam Next Fest page of one of her games. Her author explained that she uses AI to write code because she works independently.

In response, virtual production specialist Matt Workman called the very idea of mandatory AI notifications absurd for 2026, and Sweeney supported this position and accused Valve of creating conditions for attacks on game authors.

Forcing developers to write a political statement that a crowd of haters will use against them, while helping to organize that crowd disgusting

The film's director, Jim Geduldick, was involved in the discussion, asking why Sweeney was opposed to disclosing information that would help buyers make decisions.

But the head of Epic Games rejected the criticism, believing that age restrictions inform parents about the content of the game, whereas AI notifications are supposedly an expression of an ideological stance.

These AI statements are as ideologically biased as mandatory political essays or requiring developers to list who they voted for

Sweeney also stated that the implications for developers could go far beyond negative comments, saying that mandatory notifications could scare buyers and cause business damage comparable to or even greater than Steam's commission.

In addition to its 30% stake, the company is potentially taking even more of the developer's revenue and livelihoods by undermining their business with these hate-AI campaigns

As they say, Tim Sweeney is against everyone.
