With PlayStation physical games after 2028, the situation has turned out to be more complicated than it appeared from the first reports.
Sony DADC has said that by 2028, the production at its plant in Talgau, Austria, will decline by about 10 percent, not 90 percent.
However, another important decision remains in force: from January 2028, Sony DADC will stop producing discs for new PlayStation games. The physical games already released by this time will continue to be printed.
The main problem for future releases is the Sony model. The company now produces PlayStation discs through its own Sony DADC and, unlike Microsoft, does not allow publishers to turn to certified third-party factories.
Former PlayStation Studios CEO Sean Leiden believes that Sony could solve the problem by licensing production to other companies. According to him, physical editions remain an important part of PlayStation culture, especially for the most devoted fans and collectors.
Leiden specifically criticized the move to digital: the PlayStation digital library cannot be resold, so the question arises If you can't resell it, do you really own it?
Physical collectible edition publisher iam8bit has already stated that it would like to continue releasing games for the PlayStation and is ready to help Sony keep physical releases if the company opens production to third-party partners.
