Critics warmly welcomed the release of Gears of War: E-Day, but developers are preparing for layoffs.
Today, the PC and Xbox Series X version of Gears of War: E-Day was released early. At the same time, there was an embargo on the publication of reviews. The game is available to Ultimate buyers, while the global release will be on October 6.
E-Day chronologically serves as a prequel to the original Gears of War. The game will tell the story of the beginning of the invasion of the Orde of the Spiders on the surface of the planet Grey (E-Day), and the main character will be young Marcus Phoenix.
The Coalition's new project calls it a "story of a ruined house". The game takes place in the city of Cologne over three days.
The new PvE mode Osasada Orda, which can be played by up to 12 fighters, is about re-imagining the classic Ord. According to the idea, three teams are defending the city from locust attacks.
E-Day was well received by critics, with an average score of 87 on Opencritic.
According to the journalists, the prequel did the job of returning to the series' origins, while also offering an improved gameplay and excellent technical component. However, in a number of aspects the game may seem a step back from Gears 5.
The Guardian, which placed the game at 6/10, was the strongest, pointing out that there were too many levels in E-Day, and that the developers were punished for studying them for failing the mission.
At the same time, The Coalition is becoming increasingly panicked, and according to Eurogamer, employees fear that immediately after the global release, Microsoft Gaming management will start clearing the studio, while leaving them without bonuses for the release of the project and the rating on the aggregators.
In practice, the firings have already begun, they're just taking place in a quiet mode.
