Another interesting study by Steam: The authors looked at the performance of 100,000 paid games on the platform and came to the expected conclusion that most games make very little and the main money comes from a small group of hits.

Half of all games earned less than $3,622 and to make the top 10%, you had to earn about $236,000. The top 1% are already games with $15.9 million in revenue. Among those that surpassed the $100 million mark were Half-Life 2, Terraria, Among Us, Stardew Valley, Palworld and Baldurs Gate 3.

The exact sales data is not published by Steam, so the researchers rated it by the number of reviews. On average, they believe that one review corresponds to about 35 copies sold. This doesn't allow you to accurately calculate the earnings of each game, especially the big hits, but it shows the general picture well: getting on Steam is relatively easy, and earning, unfortunately, not.

Researchers have highlighted the sandbox genre as having a good ratio of competitors to potential revenue, but the platformers, especially 2D and 3D, are doing a lot worse.

Cyberpunk 2077 is a very impressive game, and it's only sold on Steam for $2 a yard.
