Sam Barlow, author of the popular interactive films Her Story and Immortality, has been a proficient critic of focus tests in movies and games. He believes that they often push developers to greater exposure: if the audience doesn't understand something, they start explaining everything to them although the need to learn for yourself can be part of the fun. In games, Barlow offers to test not the impression did you like it?, but specific things and look at real behavior. For example, instead of asking about the usefulness of an alternative shot check how often players actually use it in a few hours. It seems to have affected Marvel's Wolverine to a greater extent, which today received a patch with the ability to disable visual cues to search for collectibles.
