The head of the Video Game History Foundation, Frank Cifaldi, admitted that piracy is the only workable way to preserve interactive art. At bsky, one of the activists said: “Piracy is the only form of preserving media content in games that currently exists. You may think it's morally reprehensible, but there is literally no other organization that will preserve the games 25, 50 years from now."Cifaldi responded to this and shared the challenges he faced during his time with the foundation: “As the director of an organization dedicated to the preservation of historical video games and someone who has dedicated his entire adult life to this cause, I can say that this is true."We have tried to work with the industry trade body to find a legal solution to the problem, but they refuse to offer a viable alternative."In 2023, the Video Game History Foundation shared a study that found that 87% of classic games released in the United States are out of print.
