Who's your little girl Lay?
By the daily attendance and the rate of collection, he approached and even bypassed Nolan's Hollywood blockbuster on the home market, by the ratio of investment-collection he easily bypassed Obsession, and the staff of theaters painted a poster for free and from the heart, just to respect the work of the creators.
Yes, today we're going to talk about the phenomenon of the most successful cartoon of recent times.
A very moving creation story
It all started around 2021 in the big port city of Dalian. Sin Yumeen had always dreamed of making a large-scale animated film. The problem was that he couldn't draw, didn't know how to program and never worked in 3D editing.
In fact, that's why we decided to do everything at home on our knees and with the help of our only ally, my mother, who was already in her 60s.
Neither mother nor son (as almost everyone claims on the Internet) had even basic 3D modeling skills, nor was there any money for the courses, so everything was learned through free lessons and a wild trial-and-error method.
Sun Lifan's mother also learned what she could and helped with textures, designs and simple animation. All the voices in the cartoon are obviously their own, even the final song is recorded at home without any special vocal skills.
And so, over the course of five years, the cartoon actually made it... to theaters, even though it was supposed to stay, at best, on local video platforms like Bilibili and Youku.
How did it even get into theaters?
With the poor quality of the cartoons, you may wonder: How did it even get to the big screen, even in a country where the entertainment industry is censored and 99% of amateur movies are cut at the drop of a hat?
The story of a newborn calf who struggles with fear, grows up on his own and learns responsibility in the steppe, was as kind, positive and patriotic as possible. There was no politics, cruelty or vulgarity in it. The censors read the text, approved it and found no reason to refuse.
The master disk went to the test in 2024, and there was no problem, too. The explanation is, by the way, quite simple: the state tech commission only checks the format security so that the file doesn't break the projectors, the sound doesn't scream to the ear, and the screen doesn't completely gas. The fact that the graphics look like a 1995 greeting, the characters fly over the ground and pass through the walls, is not legally a reason to refuse a license.
And the next thing I know, the cartoon wouldn't have gone any further, because no distributor would have taken the risk of selling it, even in the form of a "free rental" (i.e. a rental without marketing at all), because the returns are much lower than zero.
Sin Yumeya had a best friend, not a simple one, but a director of a small company Tianjin Yamazaki Film. In fact, he contributed to a limited rental without marketing.
In fact, on August 5, 2026, the film was released in 245 theaters across the country.
By August 14, the rental had dropped to four movie theaters nationwide, and then... on August 15, memes took over Chinese TikTok, and the situation changed in a day.
The rental included almost all of China's leading film networks, and the film gained an avalanche-like viral popularity among everyone, even suddenly among financiers and investors, who believe in good fortune at auctions.
And the last question is... what's the point?
Where did all this love come from outside the memes?
In fact, if we can trace the touching history of creation (with the nuance, ah), the answer lies in one word sincerity.
You're not ready for this conversation, but we're living in the age of "perfect" content, where neural networks generate perfect images in seconds, and Disney studios, Pixar or Chinese Light Chaser Animation lick every hair on the characters' fur.
And this is the backdrop of a cartoon made literally on the knee, with no neurons, no budgets, no passport and no text messages, and yes, the skinny "Boy" with its decaying textures is paradoxically alive and real, and it's a feeling that people have been waiting for a long time for modern cinema.
The fact that a boy and his mother had been manually moving these coral reefs for five years instead of feeding the industry to a neuron and doing the same thing in a year with a smaller one, caused a deep respect among people.
In this paradigm, buying a ticket became a way for the audience to vote for the humanity of art. People were not paying for the graphics, they were paying for the five years of two enthusiasts' lives.
And then, all of a sudden, the unprofessional voice factor worked, and for some reason, it came out... really alive. Son Yumeen and his mother Sun Lifan brought into the voice that it's impossible to play real family intonations.
And that's... it's probably hard to put into words, but sometimes honesty is more expensive than professionalism, think about it.
