After BioWare shut down, Electronic Arts employees began to talk publicly about the problems within the company.
Vertical Slice spoke with current and former EA employees who complained about the harsh working conditions, management pressure and attitude towards developers.
• Employees are perceived as numbers. After dismissal, they are forbidden to tell their colleagues about it, and the unfinished work just hangs on. The morale in the company is extremely low, as people become fewer and the volume of tasks does not decrease.
• AI is actually enforcing. EA's management is actively promoting Claude and other neural networks.
• BioWare has been strangled for years with management decisions, pushing the studio away from traditional RPGs to multiplayer and game services, and spending huge sums of money on uncertain areas.
• The developers were afraid to take risks. According to the staff, the desire to create something interesting in BioWare gradually disappeared. Instead of creative experiments, the team simply followed the results of marketing research.
The closure of BioWare was accompanied by about 400 layoffs. The fate of Mass Effect remains uncertain: EA may sell the rights to the franchise or simply leave it without further development.
