Digital Foundry has worked out the GTA VI trailer and suggested that Rockstar has finally fixed one of the longstanding technical problems of the RAGE engine that had existed since GTA IV.
The main conclusions of the experts are:
- Smooth animation. Previous GTA VI trailers have seen camera movements and character animation cracks, even when the overall frame rate has remained stable. The new 90-second video doesn't have a problem, including slow camera turns.
Resolution and scaling. The image is supposed to be rendered in 1440p and scaling up to 4K, with black stripes present in the trailer.
- QSSR. Digital Foundry doubts that Rockstar is using Sony's new scaling technology that transfers AI upskilling capabilities from the PS5 Pro to the regular PS5.
- QSSR performance. Based on the technology testing in Marvel's Wolverine, scaling from 1440p to 4K takes about 4 ms. That's a significant part of the budget of 33 ms per frame at 30 FPS.
HDR and color transmission. HDR expert Filippo Tarpini, known for his work at Remedy, suggests that Rockstar uses the AGX tonal compression algorithm. It can explain some of the features of color transmission, such as the conversion of blue light to purple.
Experts have paid special attention to the scene in the shower where the water drops reflect sunlight and interact with the hair on the character's chest. Also, experts were impressed by the incredibly detailed iguana at the beginning of the trailer.
It's unclear what the differences will be between the PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X and S Series.
Generally speaking, experts believe that GTA VI looks extremely polished at such a late stage of development. They are particularly pleased to see the possible elimination of a long-standing problem with animation smoothness, which they previously called one of the game's two main technical drawbacks.
At the same time, Digital Foundry emphasizes that the final conclusions will be made only after the game's release on November 19.
