thoughts on Heroes of Might and Magic III.
At Gamescom 2026, it's free-to-play, so there's a lot of feedback and content on the web. Ubisoft isn't just moving HOMM3 to modern visuals, it's improving the source code. It's not the UE5 that everyone thought it was -- the game is completely reworked on the Snowdrop engine.
What do some players like? The units from the point of view of the arc are interesting. The Ubis claim that they didn't just improve on the old models, but they were inspired by painting with images of these creatures. The use of AI is seen by someone, but we're living in a time where we see a neuron where it's not actually there. The battles and sieges look exactly the most spectacular in the history of the series. But the world maps, unfortunately, can't stand the comparison to the original -- they're empty because of 3D. But there's the possibility of switching them to 2D, which saves the situation a bit.
In one interview, the creators pointed out that they're making the project primarily for a new audience and they understand that veterans are more likely to continue to play the original game. More specifically, HotA. And this is exactly where Horn of the Abyss, in my opinion, is the first big problem with the meaning of this remake.
I, unlike many, liked the design of the units in this remake, and I'd like to see these models in the new Olden Era, but... and that's where I got to the second issue of the announced remake -- early access to the Olden Era. What do Ubisoft bosses have in mind when they're doing two direct competitors at the same time?
It's also clear how Ubisoft made the decision. The recent success of their remasters + 1 million copies in the first month of early access to Olden Era. So they saw the way and gave the green light. It's clear that the project itself was in development for a long time, but for some reason it wasn't even announced for the 30th anniversary of the series last year. So they were hesitant.
I'm sorry for the extra letters, but there's a 12-minute video of a remake on the bus and you can support me there.
