Sony: Marathon maintains high player retention

At the presentation of the company's quarterly financial report, Sony said that the second season helped the extraction shooter maintain a high level of audience retention and attract new players.

The publicly available Steam statistics show a less unambiguous picture.Forbes reviewer Paul Tassie noted that at the start of the second season and with the start of the June campaign with free access to the online computer version of the game increased from 10 to 40 thousand people, but never got close to the peak of March, when the Marathon was played simultaneously by almost 90 thousand people.

Then the average daily online began to fall again first came back to 1011 thousand simultaneous players, and later dropped to 56 thousand.

According to Tassie's sources, the Marathon player ratio on PC and console is about two to one. Steam represents the largest part of the shooter's audience, although the number of simultaneous players does not allow the full number of active players to be determined.

The journalist believes that Sony may imply a small but stable group of users who continue to regularly return to the Marathon. The claim about attracting a new audience is also formally true, as the game is free and continues to sell.

Interestingly, there's no mention of Destiny 2 in Sony's report at all. The game's final update caused a significant influx of users, and it's even more popular now than Marathon.

Bungie fans don't understand why Sony is trying to kill Destiny and continues to actively promote the Marathon, which isn't as interesting to a wide audience.
