The best screamer in the Dead Space remake is the one that never happened.
The remake of Dead Space faced an interesting and rare task for horror writers: the game was expected by people who passed the original 2008 ten times and remember by heart from which ventilation and at what second a clumpy necromorph will jump.
So EA Motive came up with a programming trick called Intensity Director, which runs a library of three and a half hundred designs: flashing light, steam from a pipe, a roar behind a wall, a full-scale ambush.
The bottom point is that the system notices that the player has been shaking for a long time, and after the peak stage, it deliberately makes the player quiet, but the longer the silence, the more anxious the wait becomes.
And the best systems are the ones that have nothing material. The roof of the ventilation with the sound of no one flying behind it. And in the corner at the end of the corridor, there's a creepy necromorph that doesn't exist.
The technique itself is not new: the AI Director in Left 4 Dead conducted zombie hordes back in 2008, but the system controlled the number of enemies, and here the player's expectations.
The system was checked inside the studio. Robhiyar told me how the creative director of the remake came to find out who and why he had suddenly encrypted the enhanced partitioners, but none of them were encrypted. So the system was approved, and good, because it really works.
