And we're told that mobile games aren't killing the industry.

Philip Moren, co-founder of Red Barrels, told GameSpot that the studio spent 18 months searching for a publisher for the first Outlast, but no one was interested. At the time, horror was considered a niche genre, and publishers preferred to invest in mobile games.

As a result, the developers received $1 million from the Canadian Media Support Fund, and another $360,000 from their own savings and loans, including under mortgage. The risk was justified and Outlast, released in 2013, sold 400,000 copies in just five months. Today, the series has over 60 million players, of which almost 19 million are for The Outlast Trials, the franchise's most successful game by number of players.

However, Red Barrels continues to remain an independent studio and will not stop supporting The Outlast Trials until players are interested in new content. #game
