Boycott not helped: PlayStation records growth on all fronts
Attempts to boycott the PlayStation brand did not hinder the growth of Sony's gaming business. The company confirmed that in the past quarter its ecosystem's active audience increased, users began spending more time on games, and digital sales continued to grow.
Recall that in late August, PlayStation Blackout organizers urged PlayStation 5 owners to turn off their consoles, not log into their accounts, and not buy from the PlayStation Store.
The company's decision to discontinue releasing new games from January 2028 was an immediate cause. Fans also criticized the closure of the studios, the bet on service projects, the weak support for PlayStation VR2 and the lack of new parts in popular series.
A new Sony report shows that the quarter from July to September was a very successful one for PlayStation. The average monthly active audience of PlayStation Network in September reached 127 million people. That's eight million more than a year earlier, and two million more than in June.
Not only did users continue to enter games, but they also started spending more time in them. According to official statistics, the total duration of gaming sessions for the quarter increased by 4% compared to the same period last year.
Calls to abandon digital purchases have also not stopped the growth of this segment. Digital versions accounted for 78% of all games sold for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versus 72% a year earlier.
Interestingly, Sony also made more money from the sales of the discs. The revenue from physical releases was ¥43.1 billion, almost eight billion more than a year earlier. However, digital versions provided a significantly larger sum of ¥330.8 billion, adding ¥60.5 billion for the year.
Sony's gaming revenue grew 9%, and operating profit increased 89%, and the company is now preparing for the debut of Grand Theft Auto VI and the arrival of new players on PlayStation 5.
Another proof that all these boycotts are pointless, as the average person will go and buy a digital reissue of the new Call of Duty.
