Japanese Cygames, known for Umamusume: Pretty Derby, Granblue Fantasy and Shadowverse, discusses its approach to Western localization of its games.

It's not just a direct translation, the team is changing dialects, speech patterns, and individual expressions to preserve the characters' character and social image for the Western audience.

For example:

- in some places Merry Christmas has been replaced by Happy Holidays, although in the Japanese version the characters say exactly Merry Christmas; - many romantic scenes have been made less pronounced; - Mihono Bourbon in the Japanese version refers to Coach as Master, and in the English text is used Trainer.

Localisers explain these changes by the fact that some cultural features are difficult to convey directly, so instead of literal translation, they choose English analogues that should convey the imagined image of the character. #game
